Fodder to Infection and Mother of All Addictions

Sugar is the substance that feeds many diseases like infection and cancer. Sugar is the first addiction in almost all of us, an even stronger and more pronounced addiction in those who are “sugar sensitive”. Sugar contributes to depression, cravings, obesity, and allergies, creates conditions ideal for many diseases to flourish, hastens the destruction of teeth and may even have a negative effect on our DNA! My own personal struggle against my sugar addiction has led me to ask questions and encourage my clients to “get off the sugar roller coaster” with good success. The clients taught me about this issue, bring books to my attention and teaching me with their recovery. I thank them for this!

Sugar is one of the most frequently used food additive in the last century and promises to be as popular in the 21st century. I believe, based on my own personal health journey, the experiences of my clients and my family, and on the reams of research I have waded though, that sugar truly is a form of poison that makes a major contribution to many diseases and to alcohol and drug addictions. It is my assertion that in the Natural Control Method (NCM), sugar is an important factor that must be accounted for during the course of the NCM protocols.

Sugar is a sweet siren song in all our lives, a constant pull to pleasure, and in many cases, can even represent love. Many clients I have worked with over the years equate love and comfort with sugary treats, reached for in times of stress. Many of us have been quieted as children with a pat on the head and a cookie. Who doesn’t enjoy coming home to the aroma of fresh baked goods wafting up. I remember the joy I felt as a young child, learning how to bake and pleasing my entire family with sugar-laden food. Most of us crave this type of food, as American as apple pie, and unnecessarily loaded with sugar.  Fondly remember childhood events are always punctuated by the sweets we loved to consume. Birthdays and cake and ice cream, Valentines and chocolates, Christmas and an avalanche of all manner of sweets, Halloween and bags of loot, pop, fruit leather and candy at school and the list goes on and on.

Athletes have been duped into believing that they require sugary drinks (Gatorade’s 2nd ingredient is sugar!)  Protein bars marketed to athletes are packed with sugar for energy. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Claims of the energy-building power of sucrose have been touted for years because it contains only empty calories. Sugar has little to offer but energy and is habit-forming in taste; most other whole foods contain energy plus nutrition. All foods contain some nutrients in the way of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins or minerals, or all of these. Sucrose contains only caloric energy.

The average American eats more than 40 teaspoons of added sugar every day, according to the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. That’s 305 cups of sugar a year. During one recent year, the world consumed over 92 million metric tons of sugar. The present per capita consumption of sugar in the United States is about 120 pounds per year; 77 pounds of refined sugar from the sugar bowl and another 45 pounds by way of corn sugar sweeteners added to processed foods and drinks. This is equivalent to an average of 5 ounces, or 30 teaspoons of sugar per day for every U.S. resident! Most persons now eat their body weight in sugar every year. It is no honor that the U.S. leads the world in the production and consumption of candy, or that the U.S. lead the world in heart disease, arthritis, cancer and obesity.

According to Dr. Nancy Appleton, author of “Lick the Sugar Habit,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that, between 1970 and 1995, Americans increased their sugar and corn sweetener consumption by 22 percent. The USDA reported in 2000 that Americans consumed nearly 22 million tons about 151 pounds each of sugar and corn, glucose and dextrose sweeteners in 1999. Americans derive 36-40 percent of their carbohydrate intake from sugar. Since 1984, Americans have gotten in the habit of drinking more soda pop than water. The number of 12-ounce cans of soda produced in 1997 was 580 per person about 1.5 cans a day per person, and that figure has doubled since 1974; seven-fold since 1942. Each 12-ounce can contains about 9 teaspoons of sugar.

What is Sugar?

What is this substance that our society so freely sprinkles on basically every food, chugs down and hands to our children, almost straight out of the womb? Sugar includes most sweeteners, including high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), dextrose, dextrin, corn syrup, maple syrup, honey, and all other sweeteners. Refined sugar is product of the multiple chemical processing of the sugar cane or beet. This process removes all fiber and protein (about 90% of the natural plant) and under heat, creates a substance that is refined sucrose, C¹² H²² 0¹¹, pure calories. This substance really cannot be considered a food. I would label it an anti-nutrient, and I hope to show you why during this presentation.

In 1957, Dr William Coda Martin tried to answer the question: When is a food a food and when is it a poison? His working definition of “poison” was: “Medically: Any substance applied to the body, ingested or developed within the body, which causes or may cause disease. Physically: Any substance which inhibits the activity of a catalyst which is a minor substance, chemical or enzyme that activates a reaction.”

The dictionary gives an even broader definition for “poison”: “to exert a harmful influence on, or to pervert”.

Dr Martin classified refined sugar as a poison because it has been depleted of its life forces, vitamins and minerals. “What is left consists of pure, refined carbohydrates. The body cannot utilize this refined starch and carbohydrate unless the depleted proteins, vitamins and minerals are present. Nature supplies these elements in each plant in quantities sufficient to metabolize the carbohydrate in that particular plant. There is no excess for other added carbohydrates. Incomplete carbohydrate metabolism results in the formation of ‘toxic metabolite’ such as pyruvic acid and abnormal sugars containing five carbon atoms. Pyruvic acid accumulates in the brain and nervous system and the abnormal sugars in the red blood cells. These toxic metabolites interfere with the respiration of the cells. They cannot get sufficient oxygen to survive and function normally. In time, some of the cells die. This interferes with the function of a part of the body and is the beginning of degenerative disease.”

Refined sugar is damaging when ingested by humans because it provides only that which nutritionists describe as “empty” or “naked” calories. It lacks the natural minerals, which are present in the sugar beet or cane. In addition, sugar is worse than nothing because it drains and leaches the body of precious vitamins and minerals through the demand it places on digestion, detoxification and elimination.

The Japanese natural healer, Sakurazawa, author of “You Are All Sanpku” speaks on sugar in 1964: “Western medicine and science has only just begun to sound alarm signals over the fantastic increase in its per capita sugar consumption, in the United States especially. Their researches and warnings are, I fear, many decades too late… I am confident that Western Medicine will one day admit what has been known in the Orient for years, sugar is without question the number one murderer in the history of humanity, – much more lethal than opium, or radioactive fallout-especially those people who eat rice as their principal food. Sugar is the greatest evil that modern industrial civilization has visited upon countries of the Far East and Africa. (And may I add here upon our North American Native Peoples, stricken by alcoholism, drug addiction and sugar diabetes.) Foolish people who give or sell candy to babies will one day discover, to their horror, that they have much to answer for.” (Sugar Blues Page 40)
